FAQS - adult art classes

I CAN’T COMMIT TO A REGULAR ART GROUP, WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

  • Private tuition (For individuals or groups) can be booked as individual 2-hour sessions, pre-planned workshops or in discounted group blocks of 5 or 10, to be scheduled over 6-12 months when booked. Read more here.

  • Also, check out what themed casual workshops are scheduled. There is an option on the enrollment form to purchase a casual block of 20 hours, which can be used in term groups and casual workshops, booked in ad hoc when your schedule allows.

I NEED A PAINTING KIT, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

  • There is a section devoted to recommended materials, for both drawing and/or painting in different mediums. Most students commence with acrylics (either heavy body or liquids) however it is possible to learn in Watercolours , mixed media or oils

IF I MISS A SESSION, CAN I MAKE IT UP?

  • Casual bookings for private or groups can be cancelled or re-scheduled (with 24 hrs+ notice), the policy is found on Casual Workshops page.

  • Regular groups pay a lower rate for a set term, missed sessions are not re-run, however, online learning materials are available for more work at home and sometimes if an alternative group is not full, a student may be able to drop in.

If I AM UNWELL, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

  • Don’t attend if you are feeling unwell, this is standard anywhere of course, and best for everybody

  • When there is space, ask to drop-in to an alternative group session, this can be arranged when you are well

  • A partial credit towards a casual art workshop is also an option if no other options are possible.

  • Ask for a free login for anything from the online studios that you can continue learning while resting
NB. If for reasons of health (or anything), you may find it hard to attend regularly, consider a “Casual Pass”
which is further down on the Enrolment form. You can use 20 hours whenever you book in, to whichever
    group or even casual workshops.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL ADULT ART CLASS LOOK LIKE?

  • Each regular group is made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds, with varying levels of prior experience, from beginners to intermediate or advanced.

  • All art groups are facilitated in practical sessions, as well as with the Online studio materials which also allow for the rapid development of those who can make the time to draw, read and even paint in their own time outside of class time.

  • Students often start with still life studies, landscape, ocean paintings but can draw and paint any theme, any genre, as they develop their drawing and design skills.

FAQS - JUNIOR ART CLASSES

If our junior artist is sick, what SHOULD I do?

To keep the other students well, don’t bring them along, we will provide your junior artist with lots of drawing extras to get them through the sniffly phase. (later when they are well, they can drop in for an hour to one of the Saturday mixed groups or have a part-credit to attend a casual family art workshop).

We have a Zoom system in place, so unwell, distant or travelling juniors can request a Zoom attendance, but will be drawing not painting. All you need is the Zoom app downloaded for them onto your device and a login will be provided NB. Zoom is only activated and on if you phone and request.(adults are often required to assist their junior to get set up in this scenario).

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL JUNIOR ART CLASS LOOK LIKE?

  • Each junior art session runs for 1.5 hours.

  • Drawing demonstrations and feedback on individual drawing practice happens during the first 1/2 hour. We don’t use the ‘Homework’ however those who don’t draw independently in their own time see the huge difference it makes in the creative development of those who do, and this encourages them. Gentle reminders may be necessary from parents as kids have many other things going on, and their best results come from ‘auto-correction’ and repetition, which is often demonstrated.

  • The next hour is spent on the current painting project, which often takes a term to complete. See some examples of children’s paintings completed in classes

WHAT MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED, & WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR HOME?

  • Each student requires a drawing kit, scroll down on this page, most items are easily available at Officeworks

  • Get the basic kit or the advanced kit, according to how keen your young artist is (they will use mainly the basics for a while until they start shading and using more advanced techniques, but having the materials and learning what they are for is a great help.)
